    Pichhora is a beautiful traditional garment which wins over all the hearts. It is customary clothing from Kumaon in Uttarakhand that which is their recognition whether the wearer is from the state or city or abroad.  It is a symbol of a married woman and essential for our mothers, sisters, and every woman in the family to wear it on occasions. This is because this ‘Pichhora ’ truly brings out the beauty of our women. It has a special significance and is compulsory for all married women to wear it.

    Even if you are wearing an expensive saree or a festive suit, if you do not adorn yourself with “Pichhora ” then the attire looks incomplete. The real occasion to wear this is during marriage or a puja ceremony as the “Pichhora ” has highest religious significance. It is worn in some form or the other at all the religious rituals by women who are then recognized to be from one family.  Pichhora  adds to the real beauty of the young woman and it is for this reason that she is supposed to wear it during the wedding season.

    With times, Pichhora  has also changed.  Earlier turmeric and paste of the Kilmaund tree used to applied, but now we get ready made paste too. In four quadrant is drawn the Sun, moon, Shankh (Cronch shell), A Bell with ‘Om’ and Goddess are drawn.   Women playfully wrap the cloth over a coin to make rangoli.  Al in all, Pichhora  is a symbol of Uttarkhand.

    Pichhora which is atchually a hand printed duppata has a great significance in kumaoni peoples.  It is mandatory for all married women in the family in any function.  This Pichhora is made up of chiffon cloth and hand dye with bright colours.
